The Hirakud Dam is being built in Odisha over the Mahanadi waterway for control of the city and is a gigantic designing accomplishment of India. It is the longest earth dam worldwide. It was finished in 1957 and the dykes extend for more than 25 kilometers. The dam is important for the state’s era of surge control, water system of thousands of hectares of farmland and hydroelectric control. It has been a great figure in the development of agriculture and industry in Odisha. Hirakud is emerging as a popular tourist spot with beautiful slopes and shops around. This dam is a sign of India’s improvement post-independence and seems how water assets can be tackled.  

Hirakud Dam is located near Sambalpur in the state of Odisha. Built across the Mahanadi River, it is approximately 15 km from Sambalpur city and is one of the longest earthen dams in the world. The dam creates a vast reservoir that helps with irrigation, flood control, and hydroelectric power generation. Sambalpur serves as the main access point for tourists visiting Hirakud Dam and its scenic viewpoints. 

Hirakud Dam was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India. At the time, Harekrushna Mahatab was the Chief Minister of Odisha. He played a key role in initiating, supporting, and overseeing the project, which became one of India’s most important multipurpose river valley developments.
